Maison Darroze, a family business since 1895

Since 1895, the Darroze family has been keeping alive a certain idea of cuisine and hospitality.

A story that begins in 1895

The story begins in Villeneuve-de-Marsan, in the Landes region of France, when Henri Darroze founded the family restaurant. But it was his son Jean who truly propelled it forward. He was nicknamed "King Jean." A talented chef and a remarkable personality, he made the Darroze restaurant known far beyond the village, establishing it as a respected establishment renowned for the quality of its cuisine and the warmth of its hospitality. The restaurant's reputation then began to grow, built on genuine cuisine and a hospitality that left a lasting impression.

Alongside him, his wife Louisa works tirelessly, never seeking the limelight. As is often the case in family homes, she is the quiet strength, the one who watches over, supports, and keeps the house running smoothly day after day. Her work, her consistency, and her presence contribute profoundly to the balance and stability of the establishment.

The generations then naturally succeeded one another. Robert ran the kitchens for a time, then Francis and Claude took over. The establishment has weathered the changing times without ever losing its defining characteristics: respect for the ingredients, a dedication to quality craftsmanship, and a focus on others. These simple values, passed down from generation to generation, have gradually become the very essence of the Darroze family.

The family's arrival in Langon

In 1974, my father, Claude Darroze, took over the Grand Hôtel du Lion d'Or in Langon, owned by Raymond Oliver, a leading figure in French gastronomy and chef of Le Grand Véfour in Paris. This acquisition marked the family's arrival in the South Gironde region. Meanwhile, the historic restaurant in Villeneuve-de-Marsan continued its story under the guidance of Francis, and later Hélène Darroze.

In Langon, the hotel-restaurant gradually became a vibrant place, a hub for travelers, regulars, families, and memories. Over the years, generations of customers gathered around a table, each contributing to the history of the establishment.

Growing up in this house

I grew up here. For several years, my family lived in the hotel rooms. In the mornings, I would almost instinctively go down to the kitchen. There I would find my father at work. The kitchen was his world: the exacting standards of the ingredients, the precision of the movements, the daily rigor. By his side, I understood very early on that quality cannot be decreed: it is built every day, with patience and consistency.

But a restaurant like this can't rely on just the kitchen. My mother, Marie-Pierre, was the other balance. She oversaw the welcome, the quality of the service, and the elegance of the place. She was the one who gave the restaurant its atmosphere, that attentiveness to the customers, that energy in the service that transforms a restaurant into a true home of hospitality.

While my parents devoted themselves fully to their careers, my grandmother Louisa was a constant presence in our lives. She was a significant influence on our childhood. Every day, she cooked simple yet hearty meals, patiently simmering them. Through her, we learned not only the joy of cooking, but also deeper values: patience, humility, respect for others, and the importance of family.

Since 2010, I have been running Maison Claude Darroze in Langon, in the South Gironde region, with my wife Annelie. We continue this story with the same commitment to quality work, hospitality, and respect for the product.

Today, Maison Darroze is both a boutique hotel and a renowned restaurant in South Gironde. But beyond the passage of time, it remains above all what it has always been: a family home where they love to welcome guests, cook, and share.

More than a century after its beginnings, the story continues to be written every day, around a simple idea: welcoming people as we welcome friends.
